Sarnath Joins the UNESCO World Heritage List — Proud Moment for Varanasi

25 July 2026 marks a historic day for Varanasi and its tourism fraternity as the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The announcement was made during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea.

Sarnath, located in Varanasi, holds a profound place in Buddhist history as the sacred site where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon and met his earliest disciples. The UNESCO inscription includes the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath, including the Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mulagandhakuti Vihara and Ashokan Pillar.

This prestigious recognition adds another remarkable chapter to Varanasi’s rich heritage and strengthens the city’s position on the global cultural and Buddhist tourism map.

For Varanasi’s tourism industry, this is an opportunity to welcome more international pilgrims, heritage travellers and cultural explorers from across the world. It can further encourage greater interest in Sarnath, Varanasi and the wider Buddhist Circuit, while creating new possibilities for the travel, hospitality and allied tourism sectors.

With Sarnath now joining the UNESCO World Heritage List, Varanasi’s timeless heritage receives an even stronger global platform. It is a moment of pride for everyone associated with the city and its tourism community.

The Varanasi Tourism Guild extends its heartfelt congratulations to all those who contributed to this historic achievement. May Sarnath continue to inspire the world with its message of peace, wisdom and compassion
